Finesse Beauty - House of Fashion (HOF), a brand which began with the story of a little Dominican black girl and her little yellow dress who was able to defy all odds which stood in her way and forge the path for the emergence of authentic couture and fashion in her home island, Dominica, is paving the way for a newer Dominican fashion experience through the introduction of her baby project, Blossom Dominica.
Kimara Matthew
who is a passionate, forward-thinking and critically innovative fashion designer, serves as the woman behind the Finesse Beauty HOF brand, which came into being out of a story of ambition, struggles, empowerment and strength. Matthew, who isn’t shy to recount her days of humble beginnings while growing up on the Small Island Developing State (SIDS) of Dominica remembers her childhood days of not having much to wear as times were often tough and clothing was viewed as somewhat of a luxury. One of her earliest experiences with fashion and how it has impacted her life, was recalling a birthday party which one of the kids in her village was hosting but sadly she didn’t receive an invitation due to her the typical ‘bow-man’ [creole expression for worn out] clothing which she wore.
Of course with the understanding that the outfits she wore was only what her mom could have provided or even what she may have received through handouts from people, she made it a goal that somewhere down the line she will attempt fashion to change her life around in a direction where she’s in control of not just what she wears but what she does for a living, as well as, putting her mind towards steadily building a solid foundation for a brighter future. It wasn’t until a bit later on when her mom purchased a simple yet decorative bumblebee yellow dress for Christmas, that fashion forever left an imprint on her mind and soul. She remembered feeling confident, she remembered being happy, she remembered feeling beautiful and from then on she knew that it didn’t matter what path she took in life, fashion had to be a part of it. Hence, the commencement of the Finesse Beauty HOF.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, similar to other businesses, the HOF brand wasn’t exempt from the challenges and obstacles which arose due to the global health crisis. Matthew saw the visible impact which the pandemic was having on her business operations while also keeping an eye out for the potential opportunities which may present themselves as well. As a result, Blossom Dominica came in to address many needs which Dominicans both here and abroad felt was lacking in the island’s fashion industry
